Hunan University of Technology (HUT) is a comprehensive university with a 65-year history of education. In February 2006, approved by the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed from Zhuzhou College of Technology to Hunan University of Technology, merging Zhuzhou Teachers College and Hunan Metallurgical Vocational Technical College in the same year; throughout its history, it has integrated Hunan Urban Construction School and Hunan Finance and Accounting School. The origins of the university can be traced back to the establishment of Zhuzhou Normal School in 1958.
HUT is renowned for its packaging education and is distinguished as the first Chinese institution to join the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes (IAPRI). The university leads as the director of the Packaging Education Committee under the China Packaging Federation. Among universities nationwide, HUT uniquely holds the position of vice-chair of the China Packaging Federation, as well as hosting the China Packaging Technology Training Center.
In 1995, HUT was one of the first pilot institutions to pass the undergraduate teaching work assessment by the former State Education Commission. In 2003, it was approved by the State Council’s Academic Degrees Committee as a master’s degree conferring unit. In 2008, the Ministry of Education recognized HUT as an excellent institution in undergraduate teaching work level assessment. In 2009, it obtained the qualification to recruit international students. In 2010, HUT excelled in the quality assessment of its master’s degree candidate training process. In 2013, it was recognized as one of the “Top 50 Universities with Typical Experience in Graduate Employment” and was granted the authorization to recruit students for the “Doctoral Talent Cultivation Project to Serve National Special Needs” at the end of 2013. In 2014, HUT commenced enrollment of doctoral students, and in 2022, it was approved by the State Council’s Academic Degrees Committee as a doctoral degree conferring unit, with “Materials Science and Engineering” approved as a first-level discipline authorized to offer a doctoral degree program. In 2024, “Design Studies” and “Biomedical Engineering” were each approved as first-level discipline authorized to offer doctoral degree programs.
The university currently has two campuses, spanning a total area of 257.58 hectares . Its library’s total construction area is 55,430.29 square meters, housing over 2.848 million books. The value of teaching and research equipment amounts to 463 million yuan, with 8,297 digital terminals available. HUT boasts an advanced computer network service system and features standard synthetic track and field facilities, gymnasiums, and a variety of sports venues necessary for physical education instruction.
HUT comprises 22 teaching colleges and 1 independent college, fostering a balanced development of academic disciplines with a primary focus on engineering, along with science, management, humanities, economics, law, agriculture, education, and arts. The university offers 3 first-level discipline doctoral degree-granting units and 1 post-doctoral research station, as well as 18 first-level disciplinary master’s degree programs, encompassing 56 sub-disciplines. HUT offers 19 professional master’s degree programs across 25 authorized fields, and 83 undergraduate majors. The university is staffed with 1 national-level teaching team and 7 provincial-level teaching teams. It also features 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center and 6 provincial-level demonstration centers for basic courses and practical teaching. HUT boasts 21 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 1 national comprehensive major reform pilot, 5 national characteristic majors, 20 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 6 provincial comprehensive reform pilot majors, 7 provincial characteristic majors, and 6 provincial key majors; HUT offers 14 national first-class undergraduate courses and 6 national high-quality (resource-sharing) courses. Additionally, there are 109 provincial first-class undergraduate courses and 17 provincial high-quality courses. The university has a total of 45,175 full-time students, with 3,744 of them being postgraduate students. HUT employs 2,820 faculty and staff members, including 1,835 full-time teachers. The teaching staff comprises 200 professors, 441 associate professors, and 552 graduate advisors. Among them, there is 1 “National Special Support Plan” teaching master, 2 “Hibiscus Teaching Masters,” and 12 recipients of “special allowances from the State Council and Provincial Government.” HUT also counts 7 “Hibiscus Scholars” of Hunan Province, 4 leading talents in scientific innovation in Hunan Province, 5 recipients of the Hunan Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, and 20 individuals who are part of the provincial “121 Talent Project.” Additionally, 6 are recognized as young talents in Hunan. 1 faculty member has been awarded the Hunan Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, 1 is recognized as an Outstanding Expert in Hunan Province, 5 are honored as National Outstanding Teachers, 3 are provincial teaching masters, and 7 are provincial excellent graduate advisors; 81 faculty members are designated as young backbone teacher training candidates in general higher education institutions in Hunan Province, 9 have reached the rank of provincial academic leaders, 27 hold the qualification for second-level professor positions, and 3 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering are hired.
HUT is home to the “World-Class Discipline” in Materials Science and Engineering , as recognized by Hunan Province, and Design Studies, which is part of the “National Double First-Class” initiative; four disciplines, including Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, and Biology & Biochemistry, have entered the top 1% globally in the ESI rankings. It houses 2 national research centers, the “National-Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Advanced Packaging Materials” and the “National Packaging Advertising Research Base,” as well as 9 Hunan Provincial Key Laboratories such as “Biomedical Nanomaterials and Devices” and “Biomass Fiber Functional Materials.” HUT is equipped with 2 Hunan Provincial Engineering Laboratories, 4 Hunan Provincial Engineering Research Centers, 3 “2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers” of Hunan Province’s universities. Additionally, it features 47 provincial and ministerial research platforms, including the “Product Packaging Innovation Industrial Design Center” and “Packaging Design Art and Technology Research Base.” In collaboration with Hunan Province’s Fifth Engineering Co., Ltd. and Zhuzhou Xiawan Building Materials Co., Ltd., it has established the “Hunan Engineering Technology Research Center for New Energy-Efficient Building Envelope Materials.” Together with high-tech enterprises such as CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co., Ltd., it has built “Hunan Province Graduate Student Cultivation Innovation Base” and “Hunan Province University-Industry Cooperation Demonstration Base.”
In recent years, HUT has undertaken 10 national and 235 provincial and ministerial educational reform projects, and has been honored with 1 national and 41 provincial teaching achievement awards. It has published 15,140 academic research papers, with 1,823 included in SCI, EI, and ISTP; undertaken 308 national scientific research projects, including 1 major and 4 key projects from the National Social Science Fund, and 1,477 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects. HUT has been honored with 4 National Science and Technology Progress Second Prizes, 2 awards from the Ministry of Education’s 8th Higher Education Scientific Research Outstanding Achievements Awards in the Humanities and Social Sciences (1 second prize and 1 third prize), 13 Hunan Province Outstanding Achievement Awards in Social Science (with 2 first prizes), 1 first prize for Hunan Province’s natural science achievements, 73 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievement awards, and has secured 977 patents. The project led by HUT, “Key Technologies and Industrialization Development of Complete Sets of Equipment for Special Indoor Environment Purification,” was awarded the third batch of Major Science and Technology Special Projects by the Hunan Provincial Department of Science and Technology in 2010. “Energy-saving Key Technologies and Demonstration in Cold Winter and Hot Summer Regions” was granted funding as part of the national “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” for scientific support.
HUT has established the Dongguan College of Packaging in Guangdong Province, which serves as a hands-on teaching and talent service hub in the coastal region. The “Joint Research Center for Global Low-Carbon Cities,” co-established with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, has conducted a major scientific research initiative, surveying nearly a hundred cities nationwide to compile the China Low-Carbon City Ranking. Since 2011, the center has been releasing the “China Low-Carbon City Development Green Paper” annually. HUT has entered into a comprehensive science and technology partnership with the Zhuzhou Municipal People’s Government, coordinating the signing of University-Industry-Research (UIR) cooperation agreements between 11 project leaders and relevant entities in Zhuzhou. It has forged strategic alliances with prominent high-tech corporations like Zhuzhou CRRC Times Group and pivotal national development zones, including the Zhuzhou Qingshui Tang Circular Economy Demonstration Zone. Additionally, the university has organized significant international academic events, such as the “2010 Beijing International Packaging Expo · China Packaging Education Exhibition.”
Currently, HUT has fostered a broad network of research partnerships and academic exchanges with prestigious institutions worldwide, including the University of Arizona, State University of New York, California State University, and the University of Akron in the United States; the University of Derby and the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom; Macquarie University and the University of New South Wales in Australia; Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences in Germany; Suwon University in South Korea; Seisen University in Japan; the University of Malaya in Malaysia; Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology in Tanzania; City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Macau University of Science and Technology, and City University of Macau.
